About Hybrid and Online Learning

Course definitions

  • Campus Course: 0 to 49% online
  • Hybrid Course: 50% to 74% online
  • Online Course: 74% to 99% online
  • Distance Learning Course - 100% online (note that DL courses require additional curriculum paperwork. See https://helpcenter.uw.edu/uw-cm-distance-learning/)

Examples of hybrid and online courses

Hybrid 5-credit Course

50% hybrid: Class meets face-to-face
for 10 days (20 hours) per  quarter. Typically a 50% hybrid class meets once a week.

70% hybrid: Class meets face-to-face  for 6 days (12 hours) per quarter. Face-to-face time should be combined rather than meeting weekly (e.g. meet two Fridays from 9 to 3 and the rest is online)

Online 5-credit Course

90% online: Class meets face-to-face  2 days (4 hours) per quarter. Face-to-face time should be combined into one or two blocks (e.g. meet on one Friday  from 9 to 1 and the rest is online).
